What Is the Difference Between Street Dance Styles and Ballrooms?

Street dance is essentially any style of dancing which is born out of the streets dance studio environment. This means that street dance styles are generally those that were born in and created outside of a dance studio setting. The most popular dance styles commonly cover at least some basic ballroom dance knowledge, such as beginner waltz classes from ballroom dancing studios, urban adult classes, Latin-based salsa styles and urban breakdancing. However, there are also other street dance styles such as burlesque, meringue, ballet and steampunk.

Street Style Dance and Ballroom Dance Difference

The first thing to understand about this kind of dance style is that it originated in and thrives in large metropolitan centers with many large populations of people of all ages. The biggest reason for this is because these dance studios were the only places where people could learn how to hop when they were growing up. The problem with this is that many young people live in high-rise apartment buildings and feel locked out of going to these places to learn ballroom or any of these other styles.

To this day, the majority of ballroom dances, including Latin, jazz, hip-hop and breakdancing, have evolved and changed tremendously from the places where they were born. Today, breakdancing and Latin styles still mostly originate in large cities. There are some notable exceptions. For example, breakdancing in Spain, Brazil and Mexico originate from Barcelona, Spain, and they are quite different from breakdancing in the United States. One of the more interesting things about this is that most people consider breakdancing to be very much like hip-hop dance, even though the roots of hip-hop are far older than ballroom.

The truth is that there are several differences between the way these two dance styles evolve. The first main difference is that ballroom is often characterized by a flamboyant style and showy moves. The dancers use a lot of fancy footwork and tend to use their bodies as props rather than using them to support their routines. This can be seen in shows like The Stepford Wives where the male dancers will break the leg of the female partner just before entering the center.

Hip hop is much more refined and sophisticated. It often is characterized by complex footwork and technical moves. The moves tend to be more graceful and are often repeated. Many street dance Styles are influenced by hip hop dance.

Another big difference between the two is that ballroom usually has a wide variety of costumes that allow for a wider range of movement. This means that the performers can get into more positions and do more difficult moves. It is also common for the costumes to be very elaborate and extravagant. These elaborate costumes make the performance much more enjoyable for the audience. However, hip hop dancers can sometimes feel a bit left out when it comes to fancier clothes and jewelry. In the past, some street dance styles never allowed for individuality.

Both styles are often considered to be street dance but they differ when it comes to music. Ballroom dances often use classical music which is slower than most house dance music. It is often considered an expression of one’s feelings and emotions rather than a form of dancing. Hip hop dancing on the other hand often uses traditional hip-hop dance music like break dancing and Locrian style.

These styles are similar but there are some major differences. One of those differences is the structure of the routines. Where ballroom usually requires the dancer to stand or walk and never cross legged. Where as in some house forms, the dancers sometimes execute a series of hip-tuck, back-do and twist moves to create continuous movement. The simplicity of ballroom style allows for much more expression.
